Proudly Serving Patients in Oklahoma City, Nichols Hills & nearby areas of Oklahoma
There has been much controversy over the presence of mercury in metal dental restorations. Mercury is known to be toxic, is poisonous at high levels, and some wonder about the health risks of mercury in dental fillings. Some researchers believe that although there is little proof that low levels of mercury directly cause health problems, these low levels may worsen existing health conditions. Mercury poisoning often has no symptoms, but can eventually cause depression, breathing problems, psychological, and neuromuscular problems.
While no definitive evidence has proven the danger of mercury in fillings, many of our dental patients prefer to avoid metal in favor of natural-looking, tooth-colored restorations.
At the office of Dr. Greg Spielmann, we offer metal-free restorations for our patients’ peace of mind and total safety. For dental crowns, fillings, and veneers, we will use porcelain and composite materials that can be matched closely to natural tooth shades.
We believe that metal restorations are inferior, and that there is no point in performing a restoration with a material that looks nothing like natural teeth and will inhibit your smile. We prefer to err on the side of caution and avoid any mercury use at our practice. Metal restorations are usually less expensive than tooth-colored ones for a good reason. We believe the quality is less than what our patients deserve.
If you currently have mercury fillings or restorations in your mouth, Dr. Spielmann performs safe, careful removal. Because removing mercury can release toxic vapors into the air, only a highly skilled dentist should perform the removal.
Reasons to Replace Metal Fillings
- Patients with mercury allergies or immune system disorders may be especially sensitive to the presence of mercury.
- Metal fillings stand out and may cause you to be self-conscious about your smile.
- Metal expands and contracts with temperature changes, sometimes causing enamel to crack or fracture.
